Perkins DPF Filters

A Perkins DPF is a diesel particulate filter — emissions aftertreatment hardware, not an engine-service filter element like a fuel, oil or air filter. On most Perkins builds it is cleanable, and on some it is designed for the life of the engine; outright replacement is the exception rather than the rule. Whether you need a clean, an exchange, or a replacement depends on the engine build and on whether the fault is soot, ash, or a damaged substrate.

That distinction matters, because a DPF assembly is an expensive component, and a replacement sold where a clean would do wastes money.

Perkins DPF Assemblies

Two DPF assembly references for Perkins engine applications. Confirm the engine serial or build number and the complete number off the removed assembly before ordering.

What a Perkins DPF Is, and What It Is Not

A diesel particulate filter is aftertreatment hardware, not a scheduled-service element. The scope distinction matters before any clean, exchange or replacement is quoted.

What It Is

A diesel particulate filter removes soot from the exhaust stream. It sits in the aftertreatment system, downstream of the engine, and it is a long-life component — not a consumable you change on a schedule the way you change an oil filter.

On many Perkins builds the DPF is paired with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) in a single clean-emissions module, so the assembly you are replacing may contain both. A “DPF problem” often does not mean a “DPF part problem” — the fault frequently traces to an upstream service issue.

What It Is Not

This site supplies engine-service filtration: fuel, oil, air, fuel/water separation, coolant and crankcase breather elements. A DPF is adjacent to that scope but sits outside it.

This page is not a stock list and not a substitute for a proper diagnostic when regeneration has failed. Perkins describes its own diesel particulate filters in aftertreatment terms, not as routine service elements.

Perkins as an
Application Name

Perkins is used here as an engine application and original reference name. No authorized-dealer relationship is claimed. Only the engine record and the assembly in hand confirm the match.

Clean, Exchange, or Replace: The Decision in Order

The single fact that decides most DPF questions is the difference between soot and ash. Soot is carbon; it burns off during regeneration. Ash is a permanent mineral residue; no regeneration removes it. A substrate that is cracked, melted or sintered is physically damaged, not merely blocked.

  1. Soot blockage only.

If regeneration can still complete, run a regeneration or a professional clean — and check the fuel and air filters first, because they are the usual reason the soot built up.

  2. Soot plus ash.

Ash is permanent, so a professional clean or a remanufactured assembly is the realistic route. Regeneration will not clear it.

  3. Damaged substrate.

If the filter body is cracked, melted or sintered, it is damaged, not clogged. Replacement is required.

  4. Regeneration fails with normal temperatures.

Look upstream — the DOC, injectors, EGR valve or sensors — before condemning the DPF itself.

Condition What it means Route
Soot only Carbon that regenerates and burns Complete a regeneration or clean; check fuel and air first
Soot plus ash Ash is permanent residue Professional clean or remanufactured assembly
Damaged substrate Cracked, melted or sintered Replace the assembly
Regeneration fails Upstream fault (DOC, injector, sensor) Diagnose before replacing the DPF

Perkins states its own aftertreatment routes: a new unit, an exchange (trade-in) at a reduced price, and a remanufactured unit through its Power Exchange programme. We publish no prices and no warranty of our own — these are manufacturer terms, confirmed against your build in the quotation.

Confirming the DPF Assembly

A DPF assembly is engine-specific. It is confirmed by the engine serial or build number, not by the model badge, because the same Perkins model designation can carry different aftertreatment arrangements across production years and emissions stages.

Identify Which Assembly You Have

On builds with a combined clean-emissions module, confirm whether you are replacing the DOC, the DPF, or the combined unit.

Check the moduleEstablish whether the part is DPF, DOC or combined before quoting.

Read the Complete Number

The number printed on the assembly, including any suffix, is what identifies it. An exchange part on some listings carries a suffix that marks it as exchange stock.

Check the suffixRead the assembly marking in full, not just the first group of digits.

Treat a Supersession as Information

If the number on the removed assembly does not match the current parts record, the difference usually means a supersession or a build variation — not an error to ignore.

Check both referencesRetain the old and the current references for review.

Check a candidate number against the filter lookup records, and review the engine-filter identification guidance before you contact any supplier.

Genuine Original or Alternative — and What We Will Not Supply

Genuine Original Required

Declare it up front and we will quote a genuine original reference. It keeps the review focused on one option and avoids ambiguity where a specification, compliance requirement or warranty condition demands an original item.

Alternative Acceptable

Where an alternative is proposed, it is labelled as an alternative, never substituted quietly. We supply legitimate replacement and cleaning routes.

The quotation states the item itself: maker, complete number, contents, quantity and delivery terms.

What We Will Not
Supply

We do not supply DPF-delete or emulator devices. DPF removal is illegal in most regions and voids emissions compliance, so a supplier that offers it is not offering the same thing. If your DPF fault cannot be resolved within the legal emissions system, that is a diagnostic problem to solve, not a part to bypass.

Filter verification is carried out before an item is quoted.

How a Perkins DPF Is Quoted

Send the engine serial or build number, the number off the DPF assembly, and what the fault is. The route — clean, exchange or replacement — is confirmed line by line.

Three Steps, One Assembly at a Time

  1. You send the records

The engine serial or build number, the complete number off the DPF assembly, and a description of the fault — soot, ash, damaged substrate or a failed regeneration.

  2. The route is confirmed

We confirm whether the item is a clean, an exchange or a replacement, and check the upstream service filters before a new assembly is proposed.

  3. The offered item is stated

The quotation names the maker, complete number, contents, quantity and delivery terms for each line. Anything unconfirmed is flagged, not guessed.

FAQ

Is a Perkins DPF a filter I replace like an oil filter?

No. A diesel particulate filter is long-life aftertreatment hardware, cleanable on many builds. It is not a scheduled-service element.

Should I clean or replace my Perkins DPF?

Start with the soot-versus-ash distinction. Soot regenerates and burns; ash is permanent; a cracked, melted or sintered substrate must be replaced.

How do I find the right Perkins DPF part number?

Confirm the engine serial or build number, then read the complete number off the assembly you are removing, including any suffix.

What is the difference between a DOC and a DPF?

A diesel oxidation catalyst reduces gaseous emissions; a diesel particulate filter traps soot. Many Perkins builds combine both in one clean-emissions module.

Can I use an aftermarket Perkins DPF?

Declare your requirement before quoting. We quote genuine original references as such, and label any alternative clearly.

Do I need to reset anything after replacing a DPF?

Yes. The ash-monitoring system in the engine ECM must be reset after a replacement or clean, so the engine’s emissions documentation stays accurate.
